Finally! The last trip back across the portage. This time Etseh and Peter portaged
the canoes while the others carried the last of the gear. Before Etseh put the
canoe on his shoulders John saw him bend down, pick something up and put it in
his pocket.
"I'm wearing my bug jacket," said Peter. "There'll be millions of bugs under this
canoe. Yech." Off they went, Peter's wet shoes making squishy noises as he walked.
John and Nora caught up to the others at the end of the portage. They could see
Etseh and Peter crouched by the shore behind some tall bull rushes. Peter had
his gun ready.
John and Nora snuck up beside them. Without talking, Etseh pointed.
Swimming in and out of the tall grass were four ducks. John's mouth began to water
at the thought of fresh meat for supper!
