The first days of the trip were long and hot. Nora's arms ached. Peter's knees were stiff and John was so hungry he thought he could eat a moose. "This is the portage before Biahti or Bea Lake," their grandfather told them. "We're going to camp here." They pulled the canoes up on shore and unloaded. John groaned every time he lifted a pack.
"By the end of this trip, we won't hear any more of those sounds from you," said Etseh. "You'll be a lot stronger."
After emptying the canoes and flipping them over, everyone scrambled over the rocks to explore the site.
