Before going too far, the grandparents stopped to talk to the kids. "Don't wander off the trail. You could get hurt or lost. Stay together and follow the trail."
Peter, at the back of the group, was anxious to get to the other side of the portage and take the heavy pack off his back. He was carrying his shotgun in one hand and was feeling impatient. He didn't seem to be listening to his grandfather.
They continued along the trail, going down into a low, wet area where someone had laid poles on the path to walk across. John wondered when they would ever get to the other end of the portage.
After about an hour of walking they came to a clearing at the edge of the next lake. John flopped his pack on the ground. "Phew! Only one more trip! Hey - where's Peter?"
