"Nobody passes by this place without stopping," their grandfather continued.
"In the past, when people travelled nearby, in the summer or winter, they came here to slide. This hill was used to predict the future!
People slid down the hill on the tip of a spruce tree. If they went down straight to the bottom, without spinning around, then it was said they would live a long life. If they spun around halfway down the hill, then they would not live to see their grey hairs because the land was not happy with them. That's the story of this place."
Minutes later the three cousins stood at the top of the hill looking at where the crusty, black lichen had been rubbed off over many years of sliding.
"Is it our turn now?" yelled Nora, as she got ready to sit on her spruce branch.
"Go ahead!" shouted Etsi. One by one, the three slid straight down the hill.
"You're lucky!" said Etsi. "I guess you will live to see your grey hairs!"
