Lithic Quarries |
|
|
As mentioned, Blood Rock served as an important rock quarry, in addition to being
a sacred site. A large lithic quarry was discovered 40 metres from the top of
the hill, covering an area of nearly two hectares. Dogrib oral tradition has not
retained knowledge of the quarry; however, an elder suggested that perhaps the
name Kwe?ehdoň, or 'blood rock,' refers not to the violent event which
took place there, but instead reflects the colour of the stone material found
at the site, which is 'blood' red in colour. An examination of place names referring
to some quality of 'rock' or 'stone' revealed three additional quarries in other
locations along the trail.
