It is customary when travelling on the land in the Northwest Territories, to
stop and fix up grave sites that are in poor condition. The white picket fences
and wooden crosses that mark Dogrib graves become weather beaten quickly in
the harsh northern environment so travellers passing by will often stop to straighten
pickets and crosses and apply a fresh coat of paint. Overgrown weeds and vegetation
are also cleared away.
Offerings, such as coins, bullets, or tobacco, are frequently left at grave
sites, and as with other sacred sites, fair weather and good hunting may be
asked for in return.
