How portages are named
As with other types of sites on the Dogrib cultural landscape, place names used in reference to portages can describe the physical nature of the trail, the conditions a traveller may encounter on that portage, or a historical event that took place at or near the portage in question. "See a Far Way Portage" (or Ts'etino Hote ), for example, is named for its elevation of 67 metres and its view of the surrounding countryside. In some cases, a single portage may have more than one name, if the conditions of the terrain change dramatically en route.
