Bear Lake Chief: A Man of Many Names |
|
|
To the Dogrib he was known as K'aàwidaà , or
'highest trader', reflecting his status as a trading chief. The church knew him
as Francis Yambi, or Eyambi. The Hudson Bay traders called him Bear Lake Chief.
Frank Russell referred to him in his published works as "Naohmby, The Bear Lake
Chief." The variety of names in the historical literature, trade and church records,
and in Dogrib oral tradition makes Bear Lake Chief a difficult person to trace.
