Bear Lake Chief
Bear Lake Chief was perhaps the most well known of the Dogrib trading chiefs. Known as Francis Yambi in church records, Bear Lake Chief was born around 1852. In 1872, he married Emma Kowea (b. 1854) at Fort Norman, and together they raised nine children. Bear Lake Chief rose to become a prominent trading chief for Dogrib groups trading at both Old Fort Rae and Fort Norman (Tulita). He died in the fall of 1913, and is buried on an island on Lac Ste. Croix, north of the community of Rae Lakes.
