They climbed the hill through the charred remains of an old forest fire and admired
the view from the grave. "You can see in all directions!" said John with his arms
stretched wide. The white boards of Madelaine's grave stood out among the bright
pink fireweed.
"Madelaine was a powerful woman," began Etsi. "People said she had strong medicine.
Before she died, she told people to visit her here. She told them to leave her
something and if there was anything they wanted, to ask for it."
John looked over at Etseh. He had placed some bullets and matches beside the cross
in Madelaine's grave. He seemed to be talking quietly to her. Everyone helped
fix up the grave by pulling out the weeds and clearing away the bushes.
Back in the canoe, John turned to look at his grandfather. "Etseh. Did you ask
for anything when you were praying beside Madelaine's grave?"
"We haven't had any
meat for many days now," replied Etseh. "I asked her for a moose."
