Etseh got the map out after supper and showed the group where the Idaa Trail went after Hottah Lake.
"We're camped here," he said pointing to their island. "In the old days, people used to go to the end of Hottah Lake, paddle down this river, go along the shore of Great Bear Lake and then portage all the way over Grizzle Bear Mountain. That portage took many days."
"Why would people want to go that far?" asked Peter.
"They were on their way to Fort Norman to trade," replied Etsi.
"That's a long way to go shopping," said John.
The grandparents chuckled.
"You're right," said Etsi. "And then when they did get to Great Bear Lake, they had to be very careful of the wind. The waves get huge on that lake."
"Once they finished their trading, did they portage and paddle all the way back to Rae on the Idaa Trail?" asked Nora.
"He?e," replied Etseh. John and Nora looked at each other with wide eyes, imagining what a long trip that must have been.
