By the middle of the day they could see the houses of Gameti.
"It's time to say hello!" said Etseh.
The sound of three gunshots at the back of the canoe was deafening.
"What are you doing?" asked John as he held his hands over his ears.
"Pretty soon we'll be at Gameti. This is how we tell them we're on our way," explained Etseh as he held his gun in the air.
Soon they heard the sound of answering gunshots from the community. John was excited. He could hardly wait to get to Gameti to buy that chocolate bar he had been dreaming of!
Within minutes they were having tea with some of their relatives. They exchanged stories for a while and then continued on their way. (Only after Nora and John made a quick trip to the store with a $5 bill from their grandfather!)
"I wish we could have stayed longer," said John.
"Maybe I could have even had a shower!" agreed Nora.
"I know," said Etseh. "But today the weather's good and we need to keep travelling if we are going to make it to Hottah Lake by the end of next week."
"I guess you're right," agreed John. "Besides, I feel pretty good out here. It's kind of neat seeing all these new places and the hand games we play at night are fun too." They continued paddling down the large lake, always staying close to shore in case the wind came up again.
